Magnetic encoders typically utilize cylindrical permanent magnets. There are two types of magnetizing directions for permanent magnets: radial and axial (or plane) direction. As long as the conditions for the magnetic flux density required to function as an encoder are met, the magnetic material and dimensions can be freely chosen.
Usually, magnets based on samarium-cobalt (SmCo) with excellent temperature characteristics, neodymium (Ne-Fe-B) based magnets suitable for downsizing and lightweight applications, and ferrite-based magnets are selected according to the intended purpose.
